Planète D's first report from Iceland

In early July we received our first report from Damien, Delphine and Lirio of Planète D, France. This adventurous family is spending the summer biking across Iceland on their tandem with the Nordic Cab bike trailer in tow. Here are some comments and photos after three weeks on the road with their Nordic Cab. (The full story of their Icelandic experience may be found on the NC Adventure menu at NordicCab.com/us.)

We´re great, Iceland is fantastic, lovely people, breathtaking sceneries, adventure and the whole lot.

We LOVE our wonderful Nordic Cab:

- huge storage capacity
- very flexible
- good stability on road and tracks
- our daughter likes it very much or so it seems
- efficiently protects her from wind and rain
- easy to handle

We are having a terrific time with it and we are extremely grateful to you guys for providing us with such a great trailer.

Share Family Friendly Bike Routes

The trick to riding with a bike trailer is to find the road not taken. When we first moved to Cambridge, we naively rode down Mass Ave to get to Harvard Square and along Walden to get to Fresh Pond. Silly geese!

Family Friendly route to Fresh Pond - from Porter or Davis Square -

I have now discovered a short cut at the end of Cogswell Ave that takes you to the tennis courts behind Peabody school. From there you can ride under the railroad tracks, through Walden apartment parking lot to Danehy Park. Fresh Pond is just the other side of Danehy park.

Family Friendly route to Harvard Square - from Porter or Davis Square -

At the end of Cogswell Ave there is a short cut to McMath Park and the tennis courts behind Peabody school. Take the underpass under the railroad tracks through Walden apartment parking lot and jog left up Sherman til you see St Peters Field. Ride through St Peters ball park to Field St. Cross over Field street to Hazel - you'll see it just up a bit to your right as you come out of the park. Hazel street turns into Fayerweather. Fayerweather is a beautiful quiet street that takes you all the way down to Brattle Street. At the bottom of Fayerweather, turn left on Brattle til you get to Harvard Square.

From Norway to Boston in a single leap

It's amazing how it all fell into place. We're settled into our Porter Square neighborhood now. This turns out to be the perfect place to start up a no-car business. For one thing, unlike Hamar in Norway, it's pretty flat around here. There's wind though, plenty of it. I hear there's some discussion going on about placing wind turbines out on the coast. I understand they're not the most beautiful things to look at, but you can't have your cake and it eat. Personally, I am in favor of any kind of motor that does not make noise. Bring on the bikes, the sail boats, the row boats, the gliders, the solar panels...

Back to business. We rent warehouse space from City Schemes (22 Kent St., Somerville MA), a popular furniture outlet in the area. They're excellent people and have been real helpful as we've settled into our new digs. Our first container arrived early May, so the warehouse is nicely stocked with beautiful 2010 models.

We quickly grabbed a cargo cab for our own use. I was so happy to be able to haul a week's worth of groceries at once, instead of heading out to the store every day. We also discovered that one Nordic Cab package (36x24x17) fits on top of the cargo cab with a bungee, so we are able to do deliveries with our cargo cab too. Here in the Boston area, we've signed up The Bike Stop on the Minuteman Bikeway and Harris Cyclery in West Newton. They're both family friendly bike shops offering excellent service and quality products. For journeys farther afield we signed up for Zip Car. So far, we've been out to explore Cape Cod where we saw whales, and up to Vermont where we signed on Equipe Sport and Burrows Specialized Sports as dealers. Vermont is beautiful!
